Intriguing coming to age: 50 Cent From pieces to weight
50 cent, From Pieces to Weight, 2007
50 cent grew up mostly around his grandparents. His mother always dropped him off. His mother said his father was God. 50 cents mother died when he was 12 years old. After his mother died he started going into the family business selling drugs. He was smart when it came to selling drugs and did not do it where most people sold it on the strip but in the back where he had his selective few customers. 50 cents cousin taught him how to cook up and sell the drugs. 50 cent got used to the smell of the crack after he kept at it. A boy from around the block who sold drugs opened a gym up for people like 50 cent so they could stay out of the street. When 50 started fighting he became confident even though he did not win it was a place where he ran away from everything troubling in life. Then 50 started becoming better at fighting in the ring because he started fighting people in the streets. 50 cent wanted to become a rapper. He met Jam Master Jay and he became his mentor. He started to go to the studio and let out all of his emotions. 50 cent started to become big and make money. He and Ja Rule became enemies. And 50 made a group with his friends called G-unit.
“For him it was all about business, nothing personal. He was trying to turn me onto the business side of things” (50 cent). This is when 50 is starting to learn what his cousin wanted to do with him. He was becoming mature and understanding that business is business and it had nothing to do with the personal life. His cousin was telling him that just because you have money doesn’t mean it has to change you. Do well with your money and be smart with your thinking. This quote is a good slice of what I enjoyed about the book because it shows when he is starting to understand. He is realizing who is on his side and what they are trying to do. He is becoming more mature. This is a good part of the book because it is show he is learning something.
Overall this book taught me a lot about 50 cent. It was interesting to see what was all hidden behind his music. What was underneath his shield? He let it all out and hid nothing. I felt like this was his personal diary. Once I had the book in my possession I could not put the book down. It kept me reading and kept me interested. Never was there a time where I because bored because it was like a mystery of what was going to happen next.
